Position Description – CT/MRI Technologist

Description of Position (Programs – Medical Imaging, Anesthesia, Pharmacy, Lab)

At the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) the lead Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)/Computed Axial Tomography (CT) Technologist is a technical position that is responsible for quality assurance and producing quality images and diagnostic exams that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of small, large and exotic animals. This position also conducts imaging research studies for the University and business industry sponsors. The lead MRI/CT Technologist monitors and controls the safety of patients, staff and visitors while in the MRI/CT environment that contain a strong magnetic field and ionizing radiation

Essential Functions

The MRI/CT Technologist performs diagnostic testing by creating images using computerized scanners. While working under the direction of Veterinary Radiologists, the Technologist selects software options and imaging parameters through application of knowledge to produce high quality  images. Both MRI/CT scanners are designed for human use, and application of medical imaging physics and skill is needed to adapt to Veterinary Medicine and research projects. This Technologist is responsible for the appropriate positioning of animals to ensure images are a true representation of the anatomy being examined.

Knowledge of physiology and cross sectional anatomy, including location, appearance and function of systems associated with disease or lesions illustrated by MRI and CT is essential for every study.

Other position responsibilities:

Perform injection of contrast agents using a power injector, ensuring proper injection rates are used for optimal contrast enhancement.

Independently manage and image the case load for all clinical services and departments of the VMC and research studies. This can include up to 10 scheduled clinical MRI and CT exams per day with potential for additional emergency cases.

Transfer images and data to a secure picture archiving and communication center.

Provide excellent service to clinicians and medical team that support quality patient care.

Facilitate open communication and teamwork among clinical care team members in support of positive patient outcomes and excellent patient care.

Deliver outstanding customer service  including (for example) greeting and receiving staff and their patients in a caring and courteous manner,  answering phone calls promptly, responding to clinicians, co-workers, and other staff needs and requests, redirecting calls, etc.

Work independently with little or no supervision.  Utilize down time for process improvement, problem solving, SOP development, and other assigned projects.

Perform and monitor safety checks on all patients, employees and visitors each time they enter MRI to comply with the recommendation FDA safety standards regarding the potential hazards of working with a strong magnetic field and ionizing radiation.

Meet annually or as needed with Radiation Safety Officer and Physicists to review adherence of ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) to prevent patients and staff from unnecessary exposure to radiation during CT procedures

Implement techniques to reduce thermophysiologic responses to heat for patients undergoing MRI, as patients will experience a heating sensation to their body during MRI and the use of radio-frequency.

Maintain safe and clean work environment

Additional Responsibilities

Create, refine and maintain imaging protocols using knowledge of MRI/CT physics and the advanced applications of GE Signa HDx 3T MRI and Toshiba Aquilion 64 Slice CT unit. When creating protocols one needs to understand slice thickness, inter-space gap and which features will reduce cardiac motion so the best images are being produced for interpretation.

Consult with research clients to discuss and conduct imaging specifics to meet their expectations and goals. Research studies include human, veterinary and medical implanted devices.


Work with Veterinary Radiologists to devise new imaging techniques.


Participate in continuing education with MRI/CT vendors and manufactures to learn new imaging techniques so that the VMC can offer the most advanced services.


Provide technical expertise, training and mentoring to veterinary technicians who cross train to become imaging technicians. This includes educational lectures, review of current techniques and hands on imaging courses.


Perform Quality Assurance analysis daily on MRI/CT scanners, log and/or report findings if service is needed.

Contact appropriate manufactures for service and schedule preventative maintenance, keep documentation of all service calls and repairs and ensure MRI/CT scanner are performing according to manufacturer’s specification.

Work closely with Facility Maintenance to keeps work area at temperature and humidity levels for optimal/safe operation of MRI/CT scanners

Creates and maintains up to date Standard Operating Procedure and Policy for MRI/CT

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications: graduate of an accredited School of Radiologic Technology, Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT)

Preferred experience in MRI and CT  preferred bachelor’s degree
